before you begin shredding, you’d be needing:
unhem the edge of the garment and stretch it a tad to loosen the threads.
using your seam ripper [pencil/fingers], start to pull at the threads that run horizontally to the hem of your garment. dont break the thread; you’d see it slowly unravel as you pull. the first couple of them may break off on their own but dont fret, just continue till you get the width of the panel you want. read: you can always add more panels but you can’t sew the shredded pieces back together!
once youve got a few threads loose, you may stop using the seam ripper/ pencil and start using your fingers to continue unraveling the threads, working your way up however high you prefer. it doesnt matter if a couple of threads break along the way.
you might notice your panel starting to taper the higher it goes. nothing to worry about, just backtrack and find the parts that you’ve missed and start unraveling them again. if you want more panels, just repeat the process! this may take awhile so it’d help if youre patient. that’s all. [:
